I'd like to think this is another one of those pieces that represents a turning point in my artistic journey. Based on a photograph of my 10-year-old niece, this was drawn largely on impulse. Someone posted this picture on Facebook, and one of my friends suggested I do an artist's rendering of it. I'd never done anything like this before, so I wasn't sure why my friend thought I should, but I accepted the challenge nonetheless.
If I hadn't found a transparent drawing grid here on deviantArt (the one made by
), this piece wouldn't have even been possible. I actually used it twice, stretching it to cover the whole picture, and then using another, smaller copy for the details of her face. I'm very pleased with the result, even if there are a few things about it that aren't consistent with the reference image (for example, there was chicken wire in the background that I decided to forgo due to my utter lack of patience).
At the same time, I like to think that in a year I'll do something that will make me look at this and think, Wow, look how far I've come.
Also, if the chicken seems to be less detailed than the rest, it's because in the reference image it was very much out of focus. The details here are actually a lot sharper than in the original photo.
