Description

Even when she's upset and disheveled, she looks gorgeous.

I had a lot of fun with this one, and I learned a lot. Doing the highlights and shadows on all the little ribbons of her hair was certainly a challenge. :whew: Overall I'm pleased with how well the colors resemble those of my reference image, and how well they blend together. I can see a few mistakes I wish I could fix, but the program I use only allows me to do one picture at a time with no chance of opening it again once I start a new one. :(

If you would indulge me for a moment, I'd like to share a few of my thoughts on Rarity. I personally find her one of the most relatable ponies in the show. My reason is simply this: for all her beauty, poise, and elegance, she is flawed- perhaps the most flawed of the bunch. She can be so concerned with her own self and appearance that she forgets the more important things (i.e. Season 1, Episode 8), she grows so obsessed with the beauty of her temporary wings that she forgets she's supposed to be supporting her nervous friend (Season 1, Episode 16), she's touchy to the point of hostile when her sister repeatedly fudges things up around her house (Season 2, Episode 5), and when confronted with the choice between taking an opportunity to follow her passion or do something for a friend (Season 2, Episode 9), she she succumbs to peer pressure and neglects a special project for a friend.
It's easy for us to pass judgement on her for being mean to her sister or neglecting a friend in favor of doing what she loves. But if we were to put ourselves in her place, how many of us could honestly say we would act any differently? Artists are by nature fickle and implacable creatures, who walk to their own beat and hate having their stuff messed with. An artist's room or workspace may look messy or disorganized, but it is the birthplace of inspiration that few with no artistic affinity would understand. And when given the opportunity to do what you truly love to do (and face the prospect of it paying off in the future), who among us can say with absolute honesty that we would choose to do something at personal cost for a friend instead? I'm sure there are a few who would, but for the rest of us who realize that being a friend doesn't always pay the bills, it would be a more difficult decision than some would think.
Of course there is more to Rarity than her flaws. She gives of herself with no thought of getting anything in return (Season 1, Episode 14), and when the need arises, she can be clever enough to get out of a sticky situation (Season 1, Episode 19). Some might say that the diamond dogs in that case were just driven crazy by Rarity being herself, but I like to think she was just outsmarting them. After all, she's never been that whiny before or since. Also, even though it takes her a while to figure it out, her true standards for what makes a good (or not so good) companion win out over good looks or desirable bloodlines (Season 1, Episode 26).
In conclusion, I love Rarity because she's so multifaceted. She's not perfect, but she tries to be. She makes mistakes, but she learns from them. And even when she falls in a mudhole, she always comes out smelling like a rose.
